Below are some of the healthy eating tips I utilize:
- eliminated soft drinks
- drink more water
- eat breakfast
- eat more fruits
- eat more vegetables
- eat sprouts
- really taste my food
- take a food supplement
- include healthy fats in my diet
- lowered intake of unhealthy fats
- food portions using the divided plate method
Everyone is different. Therefore, how you use these healthy eating tips will be unique to you. Slowly add in a new tip once the current one becomes a habit. I am repeating myself but I believe this point is crucial – the key to a healthy lifestyle is creating healthy habits one small change at a time.
Eliminating soft drinks
I started by eliminating soft drinks. I went cold turkey but suggest cutting consumption in half weekly until you’ve eliminated them from your diet. I replaced soft drinks with water, water with lemon, tea, coffee and organic juices.
Eating breakfast
Research shows eating breakfast helps lower your total calorie intake for the day. It also kick starts your metabolism by “waking up” your digestive system.
Fruits, vegetables and eating sprouts
The standard American diet (SAD) – very fitting description but I digress – doesn’t include enough fruits and vegetables. My own diet was limited in fruits. I found that by eating sprouts and juicing it is now very easy for me to get in plenty of both. See the Growing Sprouts page for details on how easy it is to grow these. Sprouting gives you a fresh supply of vegetables at a significantly lower price than organic or even regular vegetables.
Really taste your food
My favorite of all my healthy eating tips is to really taste your food and aid in digestion for full nutritional value:
- thoroughly chew your food
- move your food around your mouth
- focus – limit distractions once food is in your mouth
Additional benefit: You not only enhance your food enjoyment but you’ll eat less assisting in weight loss.

Food portions using the divided plate method
I can safely said the suggestion below is not needed if you are taking the nutritional supplement I suggested above. You appetite will automatically decrease. I now take home doggy bags from almost all my restaurant visits. I also know when I’m full and don’t have the urge to eat anymore.
Look at a divided paper plate. You’ll see three sections – 2 smaller sections and a larger section. If you’re like me the larger section was for the protein.
In reality the portion sizes should be:
- Protein should be about the size of your palm
- Starch about the size of your fist
- Fats about the size of your thumb
- Non-starchy vegetables pretty much the rest
To simplify this fill the two smaller sections with your protein and starch. The larger section with vegetables – refill with additional vegetables as needed to feel satisfied.
Eat until you feel about 80% full. Why 80% – because it takes your body about 20 minutes to let you know you’re full.
